ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Keith Kline
Indiana artist Keith Kline is a traditional painter of portraits, figurative, and landscape paintings. Using visual truth, clarity, and composition, Kline creates pictures with a quiet timeless quality.

"I like to look for the sublime in the commonplace when creating a painting. My best work is of that most familiar to me, so I paint people and places near my home studio in Bloomington, Indiana. Whether in portraiture or landscape, I try to express visual truth and a sense of reality that will hopefully connect with the viewer. My goal is to paint something worthwhile and timeless, that will have meaning a hundred years from now." -Keith Kline

Kline's realistic style in portraiture contrasts with his more impressionistic landscapes. He draws inspiration from the people and places near his Bloomington studio, frequently hiring local acquaintances and their children to pose for his figurative work. "I'm a big fan of the portrait work of John Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and Ilya Repin. I also love Andrew and Jamie Wyeth's realistic approach to portraiture."

Like many traditional Indiana painters, Kline's landscape inspiration has evolved from examples of the Indiana Impressionists, particularly T. C. Steele and J. Ottis Adams. He also lists the Boston school impressionists and Willard Metcalf as big influences in his landscape work. Among his awards are best of show in the Indiana Heritage Arts Competition, Southside Indianapolis Art League, and Indiana State Fair Professional Division, as well as awards in Hoosier Salon and Indiana watercolor Society. His work was selected for permanent exhibit at the historic French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick, Indiana.

Kline's paintings are in private, public and corporate collections including: Ford Motor Co., Bristol Myers-Squibb, OshKosh B'Gosh, American United Life, Cook Medical, U.S. District Court, and Arvin Industries. His work was documented in Mark Butterfield's book "Hoosier Painters of the 21st Century " published in 2006.
